Turkey and Syria Earthquake Crisis: What You Need To Know.

On Monday 6 February, a devastating magnitude 7.8 earthquake hit the countries of Turkey and Syria causing widespread destruction and loss of life. Over 1,000 people have been confirmed dead and this number is expected to rise. The earthquake was the strongest to hit Turkey in more than 80 years. The economy of both countries was already facing economic instability before the earthquake and this disaster is expected to add to their economic hardship.

The 7.5 magnitude aftershock that occurred on February 6, 2023, was stronger than what is typically expected following a 7.8 magnitude earthquake. Aftershocks are common occurrences following large earthquakes as the initial ground movement changes the stress levels in the surrounding area. The largest aftershock that is typically expected following a 7.8 magnitude earthquake is a magnitude 6.8 event.

Governments around the world were quick to respond to requests for international assistance, with search and rescue teams, medical squads, relief material and other forms of aid being sent from countries such as the European Union, Greece, India, the United States, Britain, Russia, and Ukraine.

The EU sent search and rescue teams, while Greece sent a C-130 transport plane along with fire service personnel, rescue dogs, medics, and a rescue vehicle…
